Dave
Collins, John and Katharine's son, manages the family's small
beach rental property at Boca De Iguanas, Cabaña Las
Iguanas.
The
Collins cottage, Cabaña Las Iguanas, is in scenic
Boca de Iguanas, on the Pacific coast two miles north of La Manzanilla
(part of the Costalegre region), in the state of Jalisco, Mexico.
You can
book this beautiful palapa-roofed upstairs room. It has a separate
entrance, private bath, one double and one single bed, and use
of the kitchen downstairs. The rate is $50 (USD) a night, with
a three-night minimum. The weekly rate is $300 (the 7th night
is free).
At
Cabaña Las Iguanas you are a lovely and scenic
10-minute walk to the Boca de Iguanas beach and mangroves. The
beach is wonderful for beginning surfers, and the area is great
for birding.
There
are 270 species of birds in the Costalegre Region, 22 of which
are endemic to Mexico, including the Boat-billed Heron pictured
here. The mangroves provide a home to many bird species as well
birding list).
Dave
Collins is also involved in Hostal Los Toros,
but as founder of Tierralegre,
he is heavily involved in mangrove habitat protection on the Jalisco
Coast.
Enjoy a dusk interpretive mangrove birding tour by row boat with
the Tierralegre Institute.
Learn from a bilingual naturalist guide about the natural history
and importance of mangrove ecosystems as you drift tranquilly
through one of the best preserved mangroves in Mexico, observing
a myriad of the 72 species found there. The La Manzanilla / Boca
de Iguanas Mangrove also hosts the biggest population of the American
Crocodile on the coast of Jalisco. But don´t worry; they´re
not aggressive toward humans unless provoked.
Your payment
directly supports conservation of La Manzanilla / Boca de Iguanas
Mangrove. In fact, 30 per cent of your payment for this tour goes
directly to the community ecotourism cooperative Cipatli, who
work in concert with Tierralegre and the Secretary of the Environment
to insure that this pristine mangrove ecosystem is preserved.
