Your Innkeepers: Katharine and John Collins

The Collins family owns Hostal Los Toros B&B, managed by John and Katharine Collins.

John, a retired political science professor with degrees from Stanford and Johns Hopkins, taught Mexican politics and society for many years. He is now active in a prison outreach program, and along with Katharine, volunteers in a community center. They teach English and arrange outings for children who rarely have an opportunity to venture beyond their Comala neighborhood.

Katharine is a retired journalist and documentary producer. She has produced a number of documentaries, including one about the Otomis in Central Mexico for Wyoming PBS, about three summers she and John spent volunteering in an Otomi community. They were also Peace Corps volunteers in Africa.

Her first volunteer commitment in the Comala area was to launch a makeshift one-room primary school in La Yerbabuena. In 2002, the state government removed the existing school in an effort to force out the handful of families that refused to relocate away from the Volcano. Three years later, after town members sought help from human rights organizations, the government reopened the school. Their son, Davison, is also involved in Los Toros, but as founder of Tierra Alegre, he is heavily involved in mangrove habitat protection on the Jalisco Coast. He has also written for Mexican Pacific. Click this link for Davison's article about La Yerbabuena.

Besides Hostal Los Toros, the Collins family owns a small beach rental property at Boca De Iguanas, Cabaña Las Iguanas, which Davison manages.
